Polyester Powder Coatings for Underground Applications

SCPC has been providing industrial sandblasting and powder coating services to Saskatoon and area for 23 years. Over this time, there have been many unanswered questions, myths, and even some misinformation regarding the powder coating process. This often includes where and when powder coatings can (and should) be used, and much more. Over the next few months, we will post articles in the SIMSA newsletter to help clear up some of these questions.

Over the past 15 years, the demand for Powder Coatings in underground mining applications has grown significantly. When considering the value for the money being invested in these projects, Powder Coatings have a lot to offer, such as:

• Cost savings vs wet paint enamel coating systems
• Quicker turnaround times
• Superior impact and scratch resistance – Far less handling damage
• Superior esthetics – No drips or runs
• Superior edge coverage on sharp edges

The most cost effective option for underground applications are Polyester Coatings. Polyester coatings are the “Jack of All Trades” of the powder coating world. They are cost effective, relatively easy to apply, offer good corrosion resistance, and are UV stable. Surface preparation is most often chemical pretreatment, “Brush Off” sandblasting, or SSPC SP-6 sandblasting. Polyesters are most widely used in applications where corrosion resistance is not a primary concern. If corrosion resistance is a primary concern, Epoxy Powder Coating materials & systems should be specified. We will provide more on that topic in future articles.
